Questions about wolves

This week we are writing a scientific report about Grey Wolves. We have been doing lots of reading about them but thought it would be great to ask you some questions, as you have wolves near you. We don't get wolves in New Zealand at all.

Firstly, you mentioned in one of your posts about ranchers. What are ranchers?

Have any of you been to Yellowstone National Park? What is it like?

Have any of you actually seen a wolf? Can you describe it for us?

Have you seen wolves attacking your animals? What do you do about this? Are you allowed to shoot them?

What are your thoughts about wolves being reintroduced to Yellowstone Park? Are you for or against this? What are your reasons?

If you see wolves, where do you normally see them?

We will send some of our reports when they are finished, so that you can give us some feedback.

  1. We do not see the wolves when they attack our sheep and cattle because they are sly and smart. We try to prevent it by getting big guard dogs. Fences do not work-the wolves just slip right through.

  2. I have been to Yellowstone National Park. But it was about when I was three so I don't remember much about it.

  3. A rancher here is someone who owns or works on a ranch. A ranch is land that the owner runs livestock on. It is usually cattle or sheep in this area. A farmer is someone who has land that grows a crop instead of animals. What do you call people who run cattle or sheep in your area? What do you call people who grow crops?

    1. We call our stock farmers - farmers, and those that grow crops we call market gardeners.
